Understanding Alloy Steel & Special Alloy Steel

By adding one or more metals or non-metal elements to carbon steel, we can change the mechanical and physical properties of carbon steel, giving the steel different characteristics for a variety of usage requirements.

Nickel Alloy Steel

Structural nickel steel has stronger toughness, wear resistance, and corrosion resistance, mainly because nickel does not form carbides with iron but is completely dissolved in ferrite. This alloy element is infiltrated into the steel, strengthening the ferrite and thereby changing its mechanical properties. This steel is called high-strength low-alloy steel. The main advantage of structural alloy steel is that it is easy to quench and can improve the mechanical properties after tempering.

Chromium-Molybdenum Alloy Steel

Chromium-molybdenum steel is an alloy steel formed by adding a small amount of molybdenum element to chromium steel. Its mechanical properties are roughly similar to those of nickel-chromium steel. It does not exhibit hardened brittleness, and the grains at the weld are finer than those of nickel-chromium steel, hence it has better weldability and does not require heat treatment. However, when the temperature of this steel rises to around 400~500℃, the creep strength is very high, making it more suitable for high-temperature, high-pressure mechanical parts.

Nickel-Chromium-Molybdenum Alloy Steel

Nickel-chromium-molybdenum steel is made by adding less than 1.0% of molybdenum element to nickel-chromium steel. It results in a strong and tough steel, the best steel type for structural use. Due to the high hardening ability of molybdenum, it can be tempered to quite high temperatures to get extremely high toughness, overcoming the temper brittleness drawback of nickel-chromium steel. It is mainly used for automobile crankshafts, connecting rods, large shafts and gears, high-strength bolts, and nuts, etc.

Nickel-Chromium Stainless Steel

By increasing the chromium content in chromium stainless steel, the corrosion resistance to non-oxidizing acids such as sulfuric acid and hydrochloric acid is improved. This type of stainless steel is called nickel-chromium stainless steel. Its structure at room temperature is austenite, which is soft and tough, easy to process, and non-magnetic. Although this stainless steel cannot increase its hardness and strength through heat treatment, its hardness and strength can be directly improved through work hardening during room temperature processing.

Precipitation Hardening Stainless Steel

This is a type of stainless steel where other alloy elements are added to the iron-chromium-nickel alloy steel. After austenite solution treatment and then low-temperature heat treatment, it precipitates dispersed intermetallic compounds that do not damage corrosion resistance, thereby improving strength and hardness. 17-4PH steel, after solution treatment and rapid cooling processes, is easy to weld and has magnetism. If it goes through precipitation hardening, it can precipitate fine copper intermetallic compounds, and the tensile strength can reach 1400N/mm2.

High-Speed Steel

This type of steel is often used in the manufacturing of cutting tools due to its high hardness, hence its name "high-speed steel" for its suitability in high-speed cutting applications. During the machining process, the high heat produced by rapid rotational friction does not affect its cutting ability. On the contrary, both its cutting ability and hardness are enhanced, a characteristic known as the red hardness or secondary hardening of high-speed steel. If cooled from around 1200℃, it can achieve a hardness of HRC64 to 65. After tempering, the hardness can further increase to HRC66 to 67.
